Green Infrastructure for stormwater management in Hamburg, Germany

Storm events with extreme precipitation are increasing with climate change. With an expected 2.5 billion people living in cities by 2050, increased sealed surfaces are one consequence. Rainwater has fewer options to infiltrate the ground and replenish groundwater levels. Directly conveyed stormwater and combined sewage overflows lead to pollution of receiving water bodies. The installation of green infrastructure (for example green roofs, bio-retention swales or porous pavements) is one mitigation strategy to minimise stormwater runoff volume.

A case study: Food sharing and its impact on sustainability, focused on the initiative Foodsharing e.V.

A third of all edible food is wasted worldwide. This is keeping nourishing food from people and simultaneously wasting all the resources that went into the production of it. In addition, it creates unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions during the decomposition process. A foodsharing-network in Germany, called “Foodsharing e.V.” aims to reduce food waste from supermarkets and households. This case study looks to understand the impact Foodsharing e.V. has on sustainability.
